Chemical composition and sources of coastal marine aerosol particles during the 2008 VOCALS-REx campaign

چکیده
The chemical composition of aerosol particles (Dp ≤ 1.5 μm) was measured over the southeast Pacific Ocean during the VAMOS (Variability of the American Monsoon Systems) Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study Regional Experiment (VOCALS-Rex) between 16 October and 15 November 2008 using the US Department of Energy (DOE) G-1 aircraft. The objective of these flights was to gain an understanding of the sources and evolution of these aerosols, and of how they interact with the marine stratus cloud layer that prevails in this region of the globe. Our measurements showed that the marine boundary layer (MBL) aerosol mass was dominated by non-sea-salt SO 4 , followed by Na, Cl, Org (total organics), NH+4 , and NO − 3 , in decreasing order of importance; CH3SO − 3 (MSA), Ca 2+, and K rarely exceeded their limits of detection. Aerosols were strongly acidic with a NH+4 to SO 2− 4 equivalents ratio typically < 0.3. Sea-salt aerosol (SSA) particles, represented by NaCl, exhibited Cl deficits caused by both HNO3 and H2SO4, but for the most part were externally mixed with particles, mainly SO 4 . SSA contributed only a small fraction of the total accumulation mode particle number concentration. It was inferred that all aerosol species (except SSA) were of predominantly continental origin because of their strong land-to-sea concentration gradient. Comparison of relative changes in median values suggests that (1) an oceanic source of NH3 is present between 72 W and 76 W, (2) additional organic aerosols from biomass burns or biogenic precursors were emitted from coastal regions south of 31 S, with possible cloud processing, and (3) free tropospheric (FT) contributions to MBL gas and aerosol concentrations were negligible. The very low levels of CH3SO − 3 observed as well as the correlation between SO 4 and NO − 3 (which is thought primarily anthropogenic) suggest a limited contribution of DMS to SO 4 aerosol production during VOCALS.

Organic matter and non-refractory aerosol over the remote Southeast Pacific: oceanic and combustion sources
Submicron aerosol physical and chemical properties in remote marine air were measured from aircraft over the Southeast Pacific during VOCALS-REx in 2008 and the North Pacific during IMPEX in 2006, and aboard a ship in the Equatorial Pacific in 2009. A High Resolution – Particle Time of Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToFAMS) measured non-refractory submicron aerosol composition during all ...
متن کاملModeling Chemical and Aerosol Processes in the Transition from Closed to Open Cells During VOCALS-REx
Chemical and aerosol processes in the transition from closedto open-cell circulation in the remote, cloudy marine boundary layer are explored. It has previously been shown that precipitation can initiate a transition from the closedto the open-cellular state, but that the boundary layer cannot maintain this open-cell state without a resupply of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Potential sources...

Measurements of submicron aerosol composition, light scattering, and size distribution were made from 17 October to 15 November 2008 at the elevated Paposo site (25 0.4 S, 70 27.01 W, 690 m a.s.l.) on the Chilean coast as part of the VOCALS Regional Experiment (REx). Based on the chemical composition measurements, a receptor modeling analysis using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was carrie...
متن کاملThe Effect of Increased Organic Solubility on Predicted CCN Activity in the Anthropogenically-Influenced Marine Boundary Layer
Aerosol particles in the marine boundary layer (MBL) are transported from their source region and processed in the atmosphere, and are therefore often mixtures of inorganic (e.g. SO4 2−, NH4 , and NO3 −) and organic components (e.g. carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, and saturated aliphatic functional groups). Although the solubility of inorganic aerosol components is fairly well known, the large numbe...
